When considering bringing on temporary employees (or “temps”) there can be a lot of questions an employer will ask themselves. Below are a few of those questions and the answers to them.
What does it mean to hire a temp?
A temp employee is someone who is hired on a temporary or contract basis, sometimes with the possibility of being hired on as an internal employee. Think of it as an extended job interview!
In what situation might I need a temp?
Temps can be extremely advantageous to employers finding themselves in various situations. Maybe a new project has popped up and the employer needs to add staff temporarily to their workforce. Its possible an area of an employer’s business may require expertise not currently available on the internal team. A temp could be the perfect solution! There could also be a position that an employer has had some difficulty retaining talent. In that situation, hiring temps could provide the employer with the opportunity to try that person out before making the decision to bring them on internally.
Will a temp be able to function on the job as an internal employee?
Absolutely! Before hiring, the employer will share all the job responsibilities and requirements with the temp staffing agency who will then match those prerequisites with the temp’s qualifications, ensuring the employer will have all that they need in the temp’s abilities to fulfill on the job.
What if I want to ‘try out’ a temp before hiring them on as my own employee?
Extended job interview, you say? Sounds like the perfect plan for us! Temps offer employers the ability for an employer to have a live trial period in their own office, working under their supervision. Should the employer decide to bring the temp on as their own employee, no problem. The staffing agency will provide you with a very simple process on how that can be done without anyone skipping a beat.
Who takes care of the temp’s liability, workers comp, and taxes?
The temp staffing agency will have a complete system offering the temp regular payroll support, benefits, workers comp insurance, general liability insurance, state and federal taxes, and full HR compliance as prescribed by law.
What if one of the temps does not work out? Will I get a replacement?
If for some reason a temp employee is not working out the way the employer had hoped, all they have to do is notify the staffing agency. The staffing agency will then replace them immediately at no cost to the employer.
What if my needs change? Can I fluctuate my workforce?
You sure can. Staffing agencies understand that needs change. Should things pick up or slow down, employers have the ability to increase or decrease their temp workforce as needed.
What is a Conversion Fee?
The conversion fee is a fee that is charged to an employer if (and only if) the employer decides to convert a temp into an internal hire. The longer a temp is on contract with an employer, the more and more the fee is reduced over that time period and can even go down to $0.
