Temporary Staffing Agencies, also known as “Temp Agencies”, are companies that partner with employers to supply contractors and assist in the hiring/employment for temporary or temporary-to-hire based assignments.

One of the most important decisions for any company considering working with a Temp Agency is finding the RIGHT ONE for your business.
You want to know…
“How much VALUE will the Temp Agency provide for you?”
You want to make sure they are reputable and take a lot of pride in each and every employee they send you. You want to see indications that they value you as the client and the job seekers because they are equally as important.
Ask them if they have verified the appropriate credentials, completed reference checks, and provide the right insurances for the employees. You want to see that they value the contractors just as much as you value your own internal employees.
There are a few things you can communicate and/or address with them to develop this insight:
#1 Be clear with your needs
This means to be as thorough as possible with the details of your company, the position(s) you are hiring for and the profile of the professional you most desire for the job(s). Walk them through the details of the position(s) responsibilities, desired experience and skills, team setup and dynamics, and any additional important needs you would like to see.
#2 Get to know their past performance just as much as they get to know your needs
Since past performance is the #1 demonstrator of future success, ask them for examples of past performance straight out. Don’t be shy about this one. Maybe you will find that they have been doing exactly what you are looking to accomplish. Maybe you will see that they have been successful in mirror areas or in similar situations. Or maybe you will discover that they are really green for your situation.
No matter what you find out, you will have some key evidence that can make or break your decision, so ask away!
#3 Ask them to walk you through the types of support they provide to contractors
You will want to ask what kind of pay range do they suspect they will be able to provide for this person(s), what kind of insurances do they provide, worker’s compensation benefits, etc.
Depending on the position, there will be additional employment-related provisions that you will want to find out, like payroll structures, taxes, indemnification, etc. How will they and you be protected should an unpleasant situation arise?
Once you have selected a Temp Agency partner, the most important thing you can do is continue a communication-filled relationship. It will likely require more communication in the beginning, but as you continue along with the relationship, you will both begin to get a feel for each other’s preferences and spoken or unspoken needs.
You will also begin to see if they are exactly what they have told you in the beginning. Are they really as reliable as they said they would be?
Keep sight of that component and make sure you see the value you were promised. If not, learn from the experience and move on quickly.
