The Pros:

#1 Save Money

Hiring temps is almost always cheaper than hiring an employee to your internal team, providing them benefits, etc. because the staffing agency takes on that burden.

 

#2 Save Time

Temp agencies often have personnel ready to go to work immediately.  Also, should you be considering a temp from an agency, the screening process is often much faster because you as the employer are going to have the opportunity to ‘try them out’ before you decide to keep them on, which eases some of the stress of the screening process.

 

#3 Employers can ‘Try Before You Buy’ With Temps

Many employers enjoy utilizing temp staffing services for the main reason that they have the opportunity to try out each new hire, before they commit to bringing them on as an internal employee.  The employer gets to see each temp hired in action, on the job for as long as they like before ever having to weigh the cost of hiring them on internally.

 

#4 Employers Can Build and Fluctuate with The Tides

In hiring temps, employers have the option to scale up or down freely, as needed.  This removes the worry associated with maintaining internal staff and anticipating market changes, project influx, etc.

#1 Are Temps Reliable?

Sometimes an employer will question if hiring temps are reliable or not?  After all, how does the employer know if the temps are as committed to the job as someone hired as an internal employee?  The answer to this question is, they don’t know this.  The main mitigating factor in this problem is how much confidence does the employer have in the temp staffing agency.  Since it is their employee on paper, its important for employers to fully understand the temp staffing agency’s process in hiring temps and (almost more importantly) how are they supporting them throughout their temp assignment.  These two pieces will make all the difference in how a temp employee treats an assignment.

 

#2 Training Can Be Ongoing

Depending on the volume and how often an employer is hiring temps, they may find themselves constantly training new temps.  Each time a new temp is brought on, someone from the company will be assigned to get them up to speed and each new temp will require some period of ramp-up time.  This is an important and often overlooked component in each temp hiring calculation that needs to be considered.

 

#3 Temps Should Not Be (But Often Are) Treated Differently

While every company is well-meaning, sometimes internal employees will view temp employees a little differently than those that are there on a permanent basis.  There is usually no malice meant in these actions, however, it can be detrimental to the temp’s moral on the job.  It is important each employer utilizing temp employees, sets a certain standard of group participation with their internal team members when a new temp is hired.  A great way to accomplish this is by getting the group’s buy-in when hiring a new temp.  When they have some skin in the game, they are less likely to treat that temp any differently than they would another internal employee.

 

#4 New Faces Every Day

Depending on the type of services your company is providing, some customers or clients may like to see consistency in who they interact with.  If they are seeing a new face every single day, it has the potential to build an appearance of instability.  No company wants that.  The best way to remedy this is to focus customer-facing personnel in a consistent manner, wherever possible.  If customer-facing personnel is where your company is having the most difficulty maintaining employees, try doing an audit of hiring and employment practices.  Also, collecting feedback from employees in this area can be extremely helpful to identify areas of need.
