Temporary staffing agencies are companies that develop employment agreements with employers to assist in hiring and employing contractors on a temporary or temporary-to-hire basis.

Sometimes temporary staffing agencies can also be called a “temp agency” or a “staffing agency”.

Hiring contractors on a temporary basis can mean seasonally, part-time, full-time, or on a project basis.  Some temporary staffing agencies work in more of a general capacity, handling the hiring and placement of a variety of professionals.  Other agencies are more specialized and focus on a niche or industry sector.  These agencies can also be known as “boutique agencies.”

#1 Temp agencies are constantly developing and maintaining a talent pool of industry workers who are ready to work.

#2 Temp agencies will conduct what is known as ‘pre-screens’ with each candidate/worker intended to determine what skills each professional brings to the table, identify those who are likely to be considered the most qualified and the individuals who are maybe not as suitable.

#3 Temp agencies will enter into agreements with employers who are looking to hire.  This agreement will define exactly what type of industry professionals the employer is looking to hire, what the cost paid per hour for work will look like and any length of the contract agreements.

#4 The temp agency will immediately begin contacting professionals who ‘fit the professional profile’ that has been defined in the agreement and will recommend them for hire to the employer.

#5 The temp agency will be responsible for handling all payments to the professionals, any benefits offered, taxes, and all additional state/federal requirements necessary.

#6 The employer then compensates the temp agency based on the hourly wages of all the workers provided, plus an additional predetermined amount to cover the agency’s services.
